Do you know Hannah Szenes?
She was a Hungarian-born Jewish poet, playwright, and resistance fighter who became a national heroine in Israel. Amid rising antisemitism, she emigrated in 1939 to Mandatory Palestine, where she joined the Haganah — the Jewish paramilitary group that would later become the core of the IDF.
In 1944, she volunteered for a mission organized by the British Special Operations Executive and the Yishuv to parachute into Nazi-occupied Europe to aid Jews and support Allied efforts.
After crossing into Hungary, she was captured, tortured, and refused to betray her mission. She was tried for treason and executed by Hungary’s fascist Arrow Cross regime at just 23. Szenes is buried on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem and was posthumously exonerated by a Hungarian military court in 1993.
Unfolding Herstory - a Jewish Women Coloring Book - honors 13 Jewish women who broke boundaries in art, activism, science, and resistance: Gracia Mendes Nasi, Sarah Schenirer, Emma Lazarus, Hannah Szenes, Judith Leiber, Marianne Cohn, Hedy Lamarr, Emma Goldman, Franceska Mann, Bella Abzug, Ilka Gedő, Júlia Vajda, and Margit Anna.
